Healthy Building Network (HBN)’s Healthier Material Guidance is based on our research into common product content and health hazards. The information is organized into recommendations using a simplified Hazard Spectrum, where products in the green categories are typically better options than those in the orange or red, and products in the yellow categories are generally less preferable than those at the top, but are better choices than those at the bottom. EcoGuidance represents the environmental impact of a product. Each product category is rated through a unique algorithm developed and regularly reviewed for EcoGuide by industry experts. EcoGuidance is determined by a unique set of category-specific characteristics comprised of manufacturer-supplied data, ecolabels and third-party certifications. Products without EcoGuidance are not a reflection of that product’s environmental impact, only an indication that not enough data is currently available. Encourage your favorite product manufacturers to submit their product information to EcoGuide for review.
